From everyday growing frustrations and stresses that have a negative impact on relationships, work, and health on one end of the spectrum to substance abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and, at its extreme, murder and mass shootings on the other, the antecedent behind these ills that plague modern society lies in one complex human emotion – anger. Dr. Vicki D. Coleman has dedicated her long and extremely successful career to helping her clients and audiences understand the causes and effects of this emotion and counseling them about how to deal with it through anger management and her own unique program that helps one gain a new, positive perspective of oneself.
A former tenured professor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Master’s in U.S. and Latin American History from The University of Iowa; a Master’s in Counselor Education from Northern Illinois University; and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.
A member of several professional and learned associations, she is also a Master Addictions Counselor (MAC); Doctoral Addictions Counselor (DAC); Certified Career Counselor (CCC); Board Certified Coach (BCC); Clinically Certified Domestic Abuse Counselor (CCDVC); Clinically Certified Criminal Justice Specialist (CCCJS); and Certified Anger Management Facilitator (CAMF). Working with students, professionals, families, institutions/organizations and athletes, among others, she is also a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and a Certified Federal Mediator for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
Stating that anger issues stem from low self-esteem and self-concept, Dr. Vicki has developed her own paradigm called the Coleman Model of Self-Concept: Who Am I? She poses the question, “With respect to empowerment, how have your self-concept and self-esteem influenced your career and relationships, to name a few?” She then utilizes the six categories of self-concept (based on the work of Fitts & Warren, 1996) to facilitate individuals’ understanding themselves and embarking on the road to healing.
Dr. Vicki has a rare gift when it comes to capturing and holding an audience’s attention. She is a knowledgeable, dynamic and delightful speaker who can talk about numerous subjects including:
